Physical Properties
Tektites are silica rich objects once believed to be meteorites however there chemical composition and distribution have led scientists to believe they may not be of extra terrestrial origin, but caused by terrestrial rocks melting as a result of a meteorite impact. Tektites have a composition similar to some volcanic rocks, a high silca content and rich in oxides of potassium, calcium and aluminium. Tektites are usually translucent and occur in a range of colours from green to brown. Also see Moldavite Tektite. They do not contain the crystallites found in obsidian but have characteristic round bubble inclusions. Group METEORITE, Composition Mainly SiO2, Hardness 5.0, Crystal structure AMORPHOUS.
