Spectrolite Physical Properties
Spectrolite is a Feldspars are common in the earths crust than any other minerals. Most feldspars can be divided into two groups, alkali feldspars (KalSi3O8 NaAlSi3O8 series) and plagioclase (NaAlSi3O8 CaAL2Si2O8 series), with albite is an end member in each of these series. Moonstone is the low temperature pure potassium end member of the alkali group. It is the opalescent variety of orthoclase, with a blue or white sheen, hence its name like the shine of the moon. This is due to the alternating layers of orthoclase and albite feldspar that cause a reflection of light. Moonstone comes in colourless, white, grey and yellow or peach, but always has a blue or white sheen. Rainbow moonstone is colourless with a blue sheen and a rainbow-like array of colours. It forms in lots of metamorphic and igneous rocks, and can also occur in some sedimentary rocks. Group SILICATES, Composition KalSi3O8, Hardness 6.0-6.5, Crystal structure MONOCLINIC.
