Lepidolite Physical Properties - Lepidolite is a member of the micas minerals. The micas are complex hydrous potassium-aluminium silicate minerals. There are more than 20 chemically distinct mica species with considerable variance in geologic occurrence, but all have essentially the same crystal structure. The micas crystallize with a sheet structure, the sheets being held together by relatively weak bonds resulting in the perfect basal cleavage of the micas. Lepidolite mica is a lithium mica where an occasional lithium cation substitutes for some of the octahedral and tetrahedral aluminium in the mica crystal structure. Lepidolite mica occurs mainly in granitic pegmatites associated with quartz and occasionally the gem varieties of tourmaline and spodumene. It occurs as tabular, pseudo-hexagonal crystals, and as scaly aggregates. The colour is pink, purple, greyish and white, though it can be colourless. The streak is also colourless.
